Daniel Metcalfe is a PhD student at University College Falmouth with a background in industrial design and product service system design. His main research interest is in design that challenges the physical and mental divisions between human and natural habitats and looks at non human species both as clients of design and as potential participants in the design process.

His current project looks at integrating ecological principles and habitat creation into concrete coastal structures such as seawalls, slipways and coastal defences and at the aesthetic potential of bio-colonization of artificial structures by intertidal species. The project is funded by the European Social Fund and is linked to the Cornish industry through a partnership with a local concrete manufacturer and links with local marine conservation groups.
